House Guests and Good Wine
My friends Ilana and Susi stayed with me for a few days last week. I know Ilana from when she worked at Women's Environmental Network (UK), and then later when we worked together at Friends of the Earth Netherlands in the mid-1990's. They are both playing in the London Klezmer Quartet, and Ilana was in town to do some baroque concerts. It was a very pleasant few days, especially as they were my first house guests in the "new" flat. They brought me a couple bottles of wine from Jasdi whom I visited 3 years ago. The Ranolder Voros 2008 Cabernet Franc is a serious, deep, full-bodied, excellent dry red wine from Balaton. Only a couple thousand bottles were produced, but if you can find one, it is worth the 5500 huf. I have not tried the Ranolder Furmint-Italian Riesling yet, but the Weninger organic and biodynamic Sopron 2008 (70% Merlot, 30% Syrah) dry red was good. I have liked all Weninger wines I have tried, and they are among the only organic wines I have ever liked. One gorgeous autumn day we took the BKV boat from Jaszai Mari ter to Romai Part and enjoyed a beer and bruchetta by the Danube at Fellini's. The one-hour trip is a bargain for 400 huf, or free with a monthly BKV pass. One night after a dinner of Man-Catcher Eggplant we watched a couple bad movies, and I darned Susi's jumper. Thank you Mrs. Venner for teaching me such an important life skill. A very pleasant few days.
