They Should Have Practiced Twice
Guitar great Jamie Howell (UK) was back in town this week and rejoined fellow former-Tea Thieves member Mike Kentish (The Poosta Ramblers, Rebel Star) for a Monday night gig at the Potkulcs. Joining them were David Asztalos on bass (usually on drums with the Random Chocolates and The Vibe), and Greg Ziegler (The Poosta Ramblers, Mookie Brando and the Second Cousins, The Last Drops...) on drums. Other original members Todd Warner Moore and Scott Finlayson would have filled out the roster if they were not thousands of miles away.
I think for all of us concerned, it would have been best if they had practiced twice. The fact that they only practiced once together before going on stage, and with Greg not even hearing many of the songs before, only made matters worse. If they had practiced twice, at least it would make us feel better about them being so goddamned talented that they do not even have to practice. Kata said that it was the best concert I have brought her to yet.
Mixed in with some classic Tea Thieves tunes like my my favorites "Lobsters," "When We Were Six," and "The Prairie Song," they rocked some Stevie Wonder and Led Zeppelin. I have never seen or heard Mike sing like that before! I also really liked "The Cleaner" which I do not remember hearing before. I know it was cold out that night because Greg actually kept his shoes on for the first 10 minutes. The next Tea Thieves reunion it would also be great to hear "Bottles on the Balcony" again guys.
