The Good Life in Aggtelek National Park Part II: Bodvalenke Dragon Festival

bodvalenke freskofaluBodvalenke

I heard a few years ago from Jeroen and Lennard that the village of Bodvalenke was the sight of some amazing frescoes painted on the facades of the houses. We promised our neighbours Sanyi, Csabi and Sonja to take them because Bodvalenke hosts the so-called "Dragon Festival" every year. I do not know what it has to do with dragons, but it has lots of roma performers - this year Stefano was the headliner. I thought it was the actually home owners that had painted the frescos, but in fact, it was a funded project with artists from around Hungary. They were all quite interesting and pretty, my favourite being the peasant agricultural scene in socio-real style. Local families set up stands selling palacsinta, vakaro, beer and palinka. For some reason the homemade palinka was very expensive and we ended up drinking something similar to paint thinner. Sanyi just had to see Stefano, but it turns out he had no idea who he was. The mandolin player was particularly good, and most of us got completely squiffed. The place is really worth visiting, and we were glad Sanyi convinced us to go.
