The Good Life Part V: Welcome Wagon Vakaro from the Lakatos Family
I have lived in town for over 12 years, and in all that time no one has ever come as a welcome wagon and brought us over food or invited us to dinner in the village. Csabi and Szonja, who we barely know (but whose older brothers Sanyi and Attila I have known for years), suddenly suggested they bring us over vakaro and lecso. Vakaro is flour, water and champagne - a delicious flat bread I had never heard of but many of the roma families in the area seem to make. I was amazed when I was told the recipe used champagne, only to find out later that by pezsgo they were actually referring to soda water. It was a big surprise when they actually showed up with the food the next night. We sat in the garden chatting for a few hours. A couple days later they invited us for fish soup and we brought some homemade bread, and chocolate for the kids. The next week, Irenke, Attila's girlfriend brought us over lecso and vakaro. A few days later, Sanyi brought his his own lecso and vakaro. Incredible to think that the local roma are competing to feed the Hungarian-American couple in town. It must be a first. I love the vakaro though, and it is a very nice feeling to finally be welcomed to town by some neighbours after so many years.
