The Good Life in Aggtelek National Park Part VII: Largest Book in the World
According to www.gomortornanyar.hu there was supposed to be a local market day in the village of Aggtelek so we went up there to taste some of the local produce - hoping to find at least some fine cheeses. We were disappointed to find that no one in town knew anything about the event. Eventually we were pointed to the Baradla Cave entrance where markets sometimes happen, but there was no sign of it and Tourinform did not know about it either. On the way home, so as not to have had a completely unsuccessful outing, we stopped at the museum in Szinpetri displaying the Largest Book in the World (March, 2010), loosely associated with Aggtelek National Park. I
thought this was going to be a real kitsch tourist trap, but I was very wrong. This Guinness Book of World Record-holding book was written about and by the staff of Aggtelek National Park. The book measures 4.18 x 3.77 meters, contains 346 pages, weighs 1420 kg, and is so big that 13 Argentine cattle gave their skins just for the cover. A family endeavour, the book is the realisation of a childhood passion. The old mill in Szinpetri was bought for the expressed purpose of housing the book and the associated Gutenberg Exhibition and collection of old bibles. When engaged, the waterwheel set in the Jósva Stream works the huge printing press. The family is also responsible for the creation of the large salamander carved into the side of the hill seen from the road on the way to Jósvafő. The mill and its surroundings have been lovingly restored, and it was worth the visit. The only
disappointment was that we would have liked time to actually read and view the exhibition on printing they have assembled, but we were rushed through on a guided tour.
