The Good Life in Aggtelek National Park Part XVII: Wines of the Summer of 2013
Izsáki Arany Sárfehér - Gedeon Pincezet 2012. From John and Gyorgyi, 11.5% alcohol, grown on the Izsák Gedeon terroir. This wine was one of our favourites, and great value for 1300 huf. The Hungarian grape is also known as Fehér dinka, Német dinka and Huszár. We also tried their Cserszegi Fuszeres which was nice.
La Gioiosa et Amarosa, DOC, Treviso Prosecco. A spumante from the Moretti Polegato family in Italy. Thanks for the gift from Angie and and Istvan and the Papp family. This crisp, light champagne was the first procecco we had ever had.
Szeremley Rizling - Szeremley Huba, an old favourite from the Szeremley Vineyard in Badacsonytomaj. This wine is 12% alcohol, and goes for about 1900 HUF. However, I have seen it on sale recently at Tesco's.
Feind 12 Irsai Oliver - 11.5%, 2012, Balatonfőkajar. I like the Irsai Oliver grape, a cross between the Pozsonyi and Pearl of Csaba Hungarian varieties. Good, but nothing special. 1200 HUF.
The Blaxland Estate 2012 Shiraz blew our minds. This was the wine of the summer. We picked up a bottle on a whim at Tesco's for 700 HUF. This was a steal. We went back and bought another 9 bottles. Blaxland is based in South Australia, and in 1822 was the first to sell Australian wine to UK. This full-bodied shiraz has a great nose and taste of blackberries. If it is still on sale, get it while you can!
I have had quite a few bottles of sweet Tokalj Aszu sitting around for 20 years. I almost never drink sweet wines, so I have been content to let it sit around. When Kata had friends visit, we decided to pop open a bottle. The Tokaji Aszu 3 potonyos, 1997, Hetszollobirtok. I am not sure how valuable this bottle was, but the ladies both savoured and devoured it.
