Night at the Uj Szinhaz

Last night I went to a concert at the Uj Szinhaz (New Theater), this amazing building across the street from the Opera House on Paula Ede u. The outside looks something between Secessionist and the set from the movie Tron, while the inside has both an aquarium motif as well as something out of a Czech fairytale. The occassion was harmonica virtuoso Gyorgy Ferenczi's fortieth birday party. As he said on stage, the event allowed him to do all sorts of crazy things on <!-- pagebreak -->ferenczi gyorgystage that he has always wanted to do. For example, there was a "love poem duel" (szerelmi vers parbaj) between a man and a woman reading poems from 20 different Hungarian poets between them (Gryllus Dorka and Keszég László). It was difficult for me to understand a lot of the punchlines, but when I got them, it was good. Perhaps the funniest was the first about a guy giving up smoking. Actors performed a piece by Hungarian author Jeno Rejto (P. Howard), and he Ferenczi was also joined on stage during the second set by a couple bands including Rackajam and the Csik Zenekar. I do not normally like the Csik Zenekar because I found them too arrogant and egotistical, but was pleasantly surprised on this occassion with their performance belnding Ferenczi's blues/rock harmonica and their Hungarian folk sounds. Rackajam's female singer also had a beautiful voice.
