English Standup Comedy in Budapest
Once again, Kinga Kremer organised a great BUDSUCS English Stand-up Comedy Night last night at the Cotton Club. Regular local comedian Christian Schulte-Loh cancelled at the last minute because of illness, but Miklós Galla (responsible for bringing Monty Python to Hungary and translating Fawlty Towers), and headliner Lloyd Langford (UK) (Winner of the Chortle student comedy award 2004; nominated for the Chortle best breakthrough award in 2008) were still on hand. MC-ing is a very difficult <!-- pagebreak -->and thankless job, I think especially at stand-up comedy events. Last night, Alan Wilkinson did a particularly good job. There were a mass of new faces, and standing room only. The 3500 forint ticket comes with a buffet dinner. The first time this was offered it was very good, but it has gotten steadily worse, so eat first. The last time I saw Miklos Galla perform I did not find him funny, but gave him the benefit of the doubt because English is not his native language. However, this time he really cracked me up, and most of his material was new. He is learning what an English speaking audience finds funny. For some reason the audience was quite hostile, and there was a lot of pointless, and unfunny heckling going on throughout Lloyd's performance. I know they say heckling is part of the show, but really, I do not enjoy listening to it, especially when it includes such gems of intellectual banter as an English women claiming not to know where Wales is. Lloyd dealt with his hecklers very well, and honestly, there was no reason to heckle him because he was extremely funny. It would be great to have him back for another show sometime. I especailly liked how after being here only for only a short while, he worked in quite a few jokes about Budapest and Hungary.
