Taxis in Budapest

Visitors to Hungary should avoid just jumping in any cab off the street. Most definitely, do not jump into a cab outside the train station - you will get taken for a lot of money. Through the years I have switched regularly from one taxi company to another in the hopes of finding a reasonable and friendly service. I have tried City Taxi, Fo Taxi, Tele 5, 6x6, and now Taxi 2000. If you are in need, all of the above mentioned are fairly reliable and honest, but I have never been fully satisfied. If you are a regular taxi user and have a company, write to the company of your choice and ask for a discount card (for some, you can do this over Internet). Many taxi companies now have special discounted airport transfers (repter transzfer) so ask for it, competing directly with the Airport Minibus service. There is also a minibus service from Keleti train station and maybe others, much like the airport minibus. However, if you are using a taxi for the airport, save the environment, save money and avoid traffic jams by taking the train. That's right, from last year there is a regular train service to Ferihegy 1 from Nyugati Station. If you are going on to Ferihegy 2, pick up the 200(?) bus accross the train tracks. It should not take you more than an hour to get to Ferihegy 2, and costs less than 500 huf! Bottlehugger Ben and I took the best taxi ride ever a couple weeks ago. The driver had a classic rock greatest hits cd in and played "name that tune" with us. OK, so we were half-pissed, but it was great fun, great music, and quite memorable.
