A Night of Magic and Comedy with Paul Zenon

paul zenonEveryone who came out last night to watch Paul Zenon, the best comedy magician in Britain, lucked out on all fronts. The rain stayed away; the mosquitos, while plentiful, were not hungry; and Paul Zenon was just as talented and funny he was claimed to be. In fact, I think he is the best act that eithe Budsucs or Baby Blue Banana have ever brought to Budapest. But back to him in a second. One should also say that the Sziget Terasz Klub where it was held was not a bad venue, if a bit cramped, and it was nice to be in the open air. Just beware, like the Cotton Club, these folks tack on an automatic 10% tip to your bill, and you have to pay for the toilet. Agi Mama seems to have done so well for herself as the best wc-neni (at Fecske) in town, that she is now franchising complete with multi-lingual signs telling us that women are not allowed in the men's room and a variety of free deodorants and hair styling potions on offer in case of emergency. The warm-up act,  John Heaton, a local British guy from GE, was fine and easily the best local warm-up comedian yet. What I liked about both acts in particular is that neither relied on that horribly boring crutch of asking if anyone was from Hungary, England, Sweden...and neither attacked the members of the audience for cheap jokes. Also, gratefully, there was no heckling. The seating was a bit confusing at first because when you bought your ticket, you had a cryptic letter-number combination that referred to your table. At first I thought it was going to be like a mixer I once attended at Smith College where everyone got a bowl of electric jello (jello made with vodka or other alcohol) with a piece of a playing card in it which you had to match with others. But then I discovered that 8h corresponded to the 8 of Hearts playing card on my assigned table. This seemed needlessly complicated until you realised it played a part in Zenon's act. Zenon was very funny, very professional, and even stayed relatively unfazed when the random assistant he picked from the audience while on stage pulled out a matching switchblade to defend his jacket that had been appropriated for a magic trick! Book him again Howard!
