Bookmarks - Closing the Circle
"Dear Adi, Dan,
I have a nice little story to tell you.....This past weekend we have been in Budapest and I dropped by at Treehugger Dan's, caught up with him, and of course purchased a couple of books. Much to my amazement, I finally ran into the book which I used to have once upon a time, and have specifically bought it once it turned out that my cousin's child was born with disability. The book is written by an autistic lady, and is a nice reading to understand their world. The book is called Somebody Somewhere by Donna Williams. Only about a month ago, while ordering few books on Amazon, I checked whether that one is still available, but it had a too long waiting time, and I have given up. Later that evening, I started reading the book, and a piece of paper fell out of it. It turned out to be a ticket for the Latvian Opera House from October 1996, with a bit of my handwriting in the corner of it. The memory came back that I have I think loaned it ages, ages ago to Adriana, while the further path is probably that it has ended up at Dan's shop during your move to Brussels. In any case, the book has made it's trip around the world, and is happily being read again." - Olinka
We find all sorts of stuff in books. Old photos, driver's licenses, bookmarks, boarding passes and train tickets, Latvian Opera tickets like above, and even once 80000 HUF (for which I was lucky enough to be able to track down the previous owner and return the cash). People use all sorts of stuff for bookmarks and we have accumulated quite a collection. But at some point I finally said enough - I am just going to leave the things in the books for the next owner to find. Maybe it will create as much joy and interest as when we sometimes find a beautiful and forgotten pressed leaf or flower among the pages. I even remember once speaking with a customer who suddenly sneezed, and he conveniently found a clean tissue in the pages of the book he had just taken from the shelf. I am not promising a Golden Ticket to Willy Wonka's factory, but you never know what you will find among the pages of a good secondhand book!
