Boll Weevil: Velmi Dobře

boll weevilLast night was the first time Boll Weevil have played at Treehugger Dan's. When Matyas, the harmonica player first contacted me about his Hungarian band playing pre-war American folk-blues, I was a bit unsure. having listened to their cd and webpage, it sounded good enough to give them a slot. What made the difference was David playing the dobro, an instrument I first and last saw almost 25 years ago at an Earth First! Road Show at my college. "The name has a long and involved history, interwoven with that of the resonator guitar. Originally coined by the Dopyera brothers when they formed the Dobro Manufacturing Company, in time it came, in common language, to mean any resonator guitar, or specifically one with a single inverted resonator. The name originated in 1928 when the Dopyera brothers formed the Dobro Manufacturing Company. 'Dobro' is both a contraction of "Dopyera brothers" and a word meaning 'goodness' in their native Slovak language. An early company motto was "Dobro means good in any language." source

Before they started playing, I was ready to throw in the towel. It's been that kind of week. By the end of the night, I had a shit-eating grin on my face. Lacking knowledge of their set list, I can only mention a couple tunes I recognised including a fantastic versions of "Hard Times" and "Rock Island Line." Not only was there a lot of foot-tapping and coin shaking going on, there was even some dancing in a dark corner.
David Trayford of Baby Blue Banana wrote, "Fabulous musicians! With no disrespect to Dan's regular performers this has to be one of the most entertaining acts he has ever introduced- don't miss them next time!"

Ongjerth Dávid - lead vocals, dobro, guitar, mandolin, kazoo

Bajovics Milán - violin, derbuka
Szabó ’Csobán’ Gergő - double-bass, jug
Sain Mátyás - harmonica, flute

At the end of the night, I have to say, look out Poosta Ramblers and Mookie Brando, there is a new kid on the block!
