Comedy Evening with Geoff Whiting and Diane Spenser

diane spencerBaby Blue Banana brought two big comedy stars from the UK to entertain us on November 12th. Geoff Whiting has been here before during the summer, so I already knew he was entertaining. I also knew I was guaranteed a good show, since BBB has brought some awesome comedians to town lately, including Paul Zenon, Jim Tavaré and Paul Foot. Geoff was a bit more self-confident this time and his shtick flowed effortlessly. If he can get on, and stay on that plane to South Africa, I am sure he will wow them. I wish Diane Spencer had had a fighting chance. Although the new Fun Palace venue was a good location for the show, it is a working bar and let other patrons in that were not interested in the show. This made for an uncomfortably noisy environment to try to do, and try to listen to stand-up comedy. I was honestly embarrassed for her. She was a professional and fought bravely on to give us a good show, but the New Zealand Comedy Guild's best newcomer in 2007 and Best Female Comedian 2009 lost out to the impolite punters in the back. I hope she gives us a second chance under different circumstances. Next up is Earl Okin. "Earl Okin is simply unique! In a career spanning more than 50 years, he has managed to combine being a genuinely world-class jazz musician with a natural aptitude for comedy. Over his long career, Earl has worked with some of the biggest names in entertainment, including the likes of Paul McCartney, Van Morrison, Sacha Baron Cohen and Billy Connolly. In the 1960s, he was recording on the same record label as the Beatles, whilst some of the biggest names of that era, such as Cilla Black and Georgie Fame were singing Earl's songs. He still holds the record for performing the most consecutive years at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, whilst at the same time, he is one of the biggest stars of Bossa Nova music in Brazil!" Catch him at Red Mud Aid on December 4th at the Corinthia Hotel, along with Jamie Winchester, David Dely & Tumba Y Quema , Mookie Brando and the Second Cousins, Keren Hanan, The Rorschach Band, Nick Palmer and Ilona Bugan, and Eva and Jerome.
