Arsenic and Old Lace
Last night, a friend and I went to see Arsenic and Old Lace (Arzen es Levendula) at the Magyar Szinhaz. The 1944 Frank Capra crime-comedy film starring Cary Grant, Priscilla Lane and Jack Carson is one of my favorite old films and I was excited to see the stage adaptation. This Hungarian production starred Beres Ilona, Csernus Mariann, Rancso Dezso, Sipos Imre and Pavletits Bela. Although there were some problems with the the microphones not being turned up high enough, the acting was quite good and we had excellent seats and a very good time. Having picked up the tickets at the theater at 6, we had an hour to burn. There was not much in the way of cafes in the area, and we eventually ended up at the Darts Pub on Vorosmarty u. From the outside it looks very dodgy, but when we walked in they were very friendly. We ordered some dry red wine (for some reason kept cold in the fridge) and eggplant cream with toast, but we lost track of the time and before we got to eat we had to run back to the theater. My friend had this crazy idea to ask them to save our food for us and we would come back and finish after the play. Amazingly, they had no problem with this! We did go back and ate our meal before moving on to the Doblo Wine Bar (the best wine bar in the city) where we had some good Kvassay Merlot (Villany), and even better Szeleshati Merlot (Szekszard). Valentine's Day 2010, the Bitch Moan and Wine Society held a wine tasting with Kvassay at Doblo. Having tasted a few by now, I also continue to be impressed with Szeleshat.
