Concert Review: Mookie Brando and the Second Cousins
Friday night saw Mookie Brando and the Second Cousins return to the stage, this time at Smile!, run by Terry and Kenny from the Fun Palace upstairs.Mookie was ill and Jerome was missing, but it was still a great rocking show with much of the audience (or at least the staff of Super Kids Nursery School) getting jiggy with it on the dance floor. Mookie has been very prolific of late, and he started things off by premiering four new songs. I especially liked the first one, "Living in the Past." Also featured where the usual suspects we all scream along with, like "I Want it Back," and "20th Century Boy." I got a dedication on "Police on My Back," and Claudia got one on "Love Hurts" for her birthday. Happy Birthday Claudia! Andrea from Superkids grabbed a microphone and joined in on "Sympathy for the Devil." There was some dead air between songs when there was a guitar problem and Chris Parsons and Mike Kentish stepped in and did a super but completely unrehearsed and spontaneous rendition of Bowie's "Jean Genie." It was also good to see that someone finally got the levels right for Chris "The Parsons" Parson, and we could hear and appreciate him properly.
