FUNZINE Literally Literary Masquerade
When Funzine invited me last week to be a member of the jury at their annual farsang (carnival) Literally Literary Masquerade bash, this year held at the Merlin Theater. This was probably because this year's theme was literature. I had never been a member of an event jury before, and was a bit nervous. But the other jury members all had experience with this sort of thing. They included poet Orsolya Karafiath, Marton Csillag of the M Restaurant, myself, and Akos from Bookline. Anna Banhegyi played the role of host and MC. It seemed to me that strangely, the vast majority of revellers were Hungarian. The majority also came in simple masks or no costume, but still quite a few put in the effort and came as literary characters. There were a couple of flappers, Cinderella, Jesus, Geisha, The Mad Woman in the Attic (Wuthering Heights), Mary Poppins, Cat Girl, the Paul Street Boys, and the Little Prince. However, the winners were a couple dressed as Don Quixote and the windmill, the Rose in the Little Prince, the Paper Bag Princess, and Willy Wonka. The people's choice award, voted on by Mardi Gras beads donated by Crumpler, was Cleopatra.
