A Cultured Evening
The Metzker Quartet (really a quintet) put on the first ever classical music concert at Treehugger Dan's. I have known violist Ramona and pianist Kiyoko for many years through the English language nursery schools in Budapest, but I had no idea they played music together. The quintet was made up of:
1st violin - Ramona Wentworth
2nd violin - Pál Metzker
Cello - ?
Guitar - ?
Piano - Kiyoko Umemura
After the relaxing concert, some of us went to the Bobek, next to what used to be my dirty pub sanctuary Wichmann's. I had never been in the Bobek (Kazinczy utca 53), but was impressed with the huge cheese chiabata sandwich I had for 800 HUF. Still too early to call it a night, John dragged me off to the M Restaurant (1075 Budapest Kertész u. 48). For some reason I have never been in here, even though I have been into its immediate neighbors Szimpla, Dupla and the Hummus Bar. It was well after midnight, but we started out with a coffee, then moved on to an excellent fondant au chocolat. Already stuffed, John for some reason then ordered a yummy French cheese plate. We finished off with a large grappa each. I also liked M because the owner and the chefs were discussing the next day's menu in front of us and making the shopping list. Somehow, one of the chef's recognised me. He said I had given him some camel milk to try. That placed the meeting a couple years ago when I was doing some envionmental work in Kazakhstan and I brought back some camel milk and salty horse cheese balls. It did not click until h mentioned that he used to work at the successful delivery restaurant Marsbeli Bolt. Friends Ben (Discover Budapest) and Anita know the owner Julia quite well and we had gone to a tasting soon after I came back from Kazakhstan and I had brought the camel milk with me.
