The Best Soup in Hungary

vietnamese spring rolls - nemFor the last two days I have lunched at the Banhmi Bistro (Hajos u. 26). If you remember the short-lived small import gourmet food shop next to the new Opera Hotel, I believe the space's new incarnation will be more successful. Banhmi offers a small but good home-cooked menu of Vietnamese food. What draws me to the place is its soup. Back in 1990, my friend Katie, a soup-a-holic, would go to restaurants and just order 3 soups for lunch or dinner. She was always on the lookout for the next best soup. For example, Pompeii at Liszt Ferenc ter used to do a great onion soup using a huge bread roll for the bowl. I think however, after 21 years, I have finally found THE best soup in Hungary. Made with lime and chili (not eros pista), their chicken-noodle soup is tops. I also tried and liked their nem rolls (like spring rolls) - vegetarian versions by request. The owner is quite interesting to talk to about his many years in the restaurant and real estate business in Hungary and abroad; and as a spot to relax and people-watch, Hajos u. is great in the summer.
