1st Tuesdays Club
As one of the many positive results of the joint action on Red Mud Aid, the 1st Tuesdays Club has been revived. Originally a monthly meeting of expat bar owners to touch base, exchange experiences and discuss pressing issues, the 1st Tuesdays Club has now broadened its vision. For example, since it is now a standing group, the organisation can now more easily and timely pool resources in order to respond to fundraising to relieve natural disasters such as the tsunami in Japan.Other publicans and event organisers are also welcome. The relaunch in March was held at The Fun Palace, where Kenny and Terry served up some nice sandwiches and some great fries as we discussed the implications of the non-smoking law and how to deal with the murkiness of the legislation. Treehugger Dan's struck up a partnership with British Pantry to sell their Fair Trade organic coffee through British Pantry's webshop. The second meeting in April was held at Caledonia where Arpad Palinka introduced their line to us in case we would like to serve it at our bars. The third meeting in May took place at Legends where we heard from Eyal Zucker from Ecowizer, a company that helps businesses reduce their environmental impact while also saving them money. Ecowizer concentrates on simple and affordable solutions to reduce energy and water consumption, reduce solid waste streams, and other processes while saving the company money. Legends has already gone through the analysis, and was so impressed, recommended it to us. For example, significant energy savings are now being made at Legends by simply setting up their big screen tvs in a different way. Becketts, on its own initiative, saved 100000 HUF/month by switching to energy efficient light bulbs. One often does not have to make huge investments for a signifigant return. For example, putting aerators (available for 700-1000 huf at Obi, etc.) on taps reduces water consumption by 50%. The next 1st Tuesdays Meeting will be held at Becketts on June 6th. Please contact Patrick at Calednonia caledoniabar@yahoo.co.uk if you run a pub, put on events, or have an appropriate product you would like to introduce to several people at once.
