Concert Review: MC Marco Jackson VS. Gregory and the Zigomatics

greg zeigler marco randriaMarco Randria (Fr) and Gregory Zeigler (US), a.k.a. MC Marco Jackson VS. Gregory and the Zigomatics.
Marco and Greg emerged from the rhythm sections of various Budapest ensembles to present a variety of original work on guitar and voice. Marco's virtuosity and creativity and Greg's (being a drummer at heart) more raw, percussive approach offered a nice harmonic and rhythmic blend. Marco and Greg also brought 3 guest musicians with them: Ágoston Fehér (Marco & Kati) on cello, Declan Hannigan (Home Sessions) vocals, and Enikő Bóna (new bass player with Mookie Brando and the Second Cousins) on flute. What was special about this show was that they were all original songs by Marco and Greg, a first. I often compare Marco to John Butler (even with a broken string) and Greg to the Woody Guthrie of Budapest, and we saw again why last night. I especially enjoyed "I (think I) Might Start Singing The Blues," "Mr. President," and "BarTalk." My favorite line was in "Life Sized Life:" "The moon came out and knocked the daylights out of me."

You will be able to see Eniko, Greg and Marco with Mookie Brando and the Second Cousins at Treehugger Dan's on November 10th, and Marco and Agostan and Greg with Kati on December 1st.

The two have been playing and recording together more and more recently, as well as playing, individually or together, in groups like Marco and Kati, Home Sessions, Poosta Ramblers, The Last Drops, Mookie Brando, the Tumbleweeds and countless spontaneous sessions. Their musical backgrounds are different and diverse, ranging from folk to funk to jazz to metal, reggae to the good ol' blues.
