I think Ash secretly looks at my music likes on Facebook before every second Monday in order to surprise me with some of my favorite tunes. As I walked in to Potkulcs last Monday he was picking out Rickie Lee Jones' "Chuck E.'s in Love." There was a full house of musicians joining in on the night, including Michael Kentish, Brian Scoffield, Eszter Polyak, Eric Bosque, Greg Zeigler, Ashley Brees, Pablo Campos, Agi Staudt, Bob Jackson, Chris Parsons, and a mystery woman. The eclectic show/jam included may highlights, such as the jam on Elvis' "That's Alright Mama," Ash singing The Waterboy's "Medicine Bow" and some David Bowie song that sounded like Lou Reed, and the Smith's Please Please Let Me Get What I Want" with the first line of 'good times, for a change." The jam on a bluesy version of Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues" could be great with some practice. Chris and Mike did a good version of Billy Bragg's "The Warmest Room" (here she comes again). Bob Jackson came for the first time with his dobro and added a lot of depth and character to the evening. I enjoyed Bob's version of Merle Haggard's "Tonight the Bottle Let Me Down" (and let your memory come around), and the Gillian Welch song "Make Me Down a Pallet on Your Floor" was somehow much more enjoyable when Bob was standing up and playing rather than sitting down with the Poosta Ramblers. Mike picked up the pace with Bill Monroe's call-and- response tune "Y'all Come." Greg did his sad but sweet "Toothbrush" song, Johnny Cash's "Deliah," and Wilco's "California Stars." Pablo, Eszter, Agi, Mike, Eric and a talented mystery female vocalist jammed on Pabloslam's "She's My Pretty." Chris, Mike and Greg even did a Hendrix song! I also liked Chris, Brian, Mike and Ash doing "Tender," and "Harvest Moon" (because I'm still in love with you I want to see you dance again). Brian is getting better on percussion. Brian and the mystery woman's version of James Taylor's "Steamroller" is my new favorite version of the song and a suitable close to the evening.
