Russian Dinner Party
Jeroen and Lennard had a few guests over for a Russian party. The international group consisted of a few Dutch, Finnish and Hungarian guests and myself. Jeroen was in the kitchen for 2 days and the menu was both extensive and delicious. Thanks for making it vegetarian for the first time! Appetizers consisted of a spicy carrot-yoghurt-garlic salad (sometimes called "Korean salad" in Russia and Ukraine); marinated mushrooms; a salad made of kolrabi, sörretek (white radish), apple, walnuts and cranberries; crepes (bliny) with cream cheese and salmon; vegetarian bliny with radish, spring onion and hard-boiled eggs. The main courses were vegetarian borscht with pampushki (bread rolls) and garlic-parsley sauce; vareniki (half-moon shaped stuffed pasta) with smoked gomolya cheese-yellow pea-almond stuffing, another vareniki with minced turkey breast; and golubtsy (stuffed cabbage with mushrooms and cream).Vareniki are one of my favorite foods on the planet, and are usually stuffed with ricotta cheese, potatoes or cabbage, and on occasion, cherries. It was a beautiful candlelit dinner from our fantastic hosts. Lennard kept the Gere Tamas dry red wine flowing so fast I never once filled the glass myself, and the white wine was from Georgia (one of my favorite wine regions). During the meal the background music was Russian, but for the afterparty Lennard put on several dvds of the former Eurovision song contest winners and we danced until 4am. The annual Eurovision party will not happen this year as Lennard's parents are celebrating an amazing 50 years together on that day- Congratulations!
