Bad Children are Bad, Good Children are Good: Theater Review
My friend Gabi had a couple extra tickets to Jógyerekek Képeskönyve or Good Child Picture Book (a German comedy written by Julian Crouch - Phelim McDermott) at the Orkeny Theatre Tuesday night. I was very much in the mood for a comedy, and was not disappointed. The play was reminiscent of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in that it was grotesque, full of black humour, and concentrated on child rearing and a social criticism of poor parenting. This is a must see for people with children, people considering children, or those that are thankful they have none (will reinforce). That said, it is also full of references to Hamlet, Madach Imre, and a host of things that were caught by my campanions but went right over my head. The makeup, sets, and costumes were fantastic. Gálffi László was perfectly cast as he master of ceremonies/narrator Dr. Roboz, who I at first took as Dr. Bobo because he looked like an owl. Children that do not finish their meal, play with matches, don't wrap up before going outside or don't pay attention to parents...will pay the price; likewise if the parents do not pay attention to the children. "No problem, we can always make another." The word games were so bad they were good. Live music was provided by the Tiger Lillies. I especially like the "Robi Repul" scene and song. Even though I only caught a half what was going on, I highly recommend this show (next are March 10 and 27).
