World Book Day and The Lorax

the loraxOn World Book Day I was invited to the Britannica School to make a presentation, among 35 others, on my favorite book. I decided to present The Lorax by Dr. Seuss, one of my favorite children's books. I also thought this would be timely and appropriate since I am an environmental activist, and a new film adaptation was just released. I was particularly upset by the right's holders to sell out and allow Hyundai to use the Lorax to sell cars. A student, Robi had kindly prepared some power point slides of some pictures from the book, but because of a late scheduling change neither of us knew about, Robi was not at the classroom on time. What to do? I told the students that we would go back in time to their grandparents' time and pretend they were listening to old time radio - since Superman, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, the Green Hornet and others started as radio programs. I asked them to close their eyes, relax, and listen to the story. This went surprisingly well, and I got a lot of positive feedback. I will be reading a couple more favorites on Saturday, April 14th (4-5pm) for Treehugger Dan's Story corner for BudapestMoms at Treehugger Dan's . I was also impressed by the reading activity the school held all day - whenever the bell rang, everyone had to drop what they were doing, no talking, and sit and read a book.
