Slow Dancing Only - No Sharp Objects
Mookie Brando and the Second Cousins put on a lovely unique, slow, chilled show last Thursday. My guitar teacher once told me that it is easy to play fast, playing slow is the hard bit. The Second Cousins made it look and sound easy, but you could tell on a couple tunes they were so into it that they just couldn't help themselves but speed up a little bit. Eleven year-old Vajk Dobo, as he did last November, again provided excellent lighting (He has so much gear, Mookie had to ask him politely to leave his smoke machine at home). Any bands out there that need professional lighting, we can put you in contact with Vajk. The band set up in a round subtly lit by white Christmas lights and surrounded by fans that, if they are anything like me, were desperate for someone to get up and slow dance with. There were several duets, including a couple with guest Patricia Hughes. As usual, these versatile and talented musicians played well, and played well together. Besides exchanging instruments, given Greg's borrowed wardrobe, it seems they also exchange clothes.
Many of the tunes came off the album Love, Truth and Other Myths (see album review), some had never been played in concert before, and there were a few new tunes that will be on the forthcoming album. I very much enjoyed both the old and the new offerings. The band features guitarist Marco Randria (Marco & Kati), drummer Greg Zeigler (Poosta Ramblers, Marco & Kati), and Eniko Bona on bass, flute and guitar; and all contribute on vocals. You can catch Greg in his first solo show at Treehugger Dan's on Thursday 8his parents will be here so let's make it a huge show for him!), May 31st, and Marco and Greg with Marco & Kati at Treehugger Dan's on June 7th.
