Nice Hungarian Cops
Over the weekend I discovered that someone had stolen the locks from my gates, the metal gutter, and the energy efficient lightbulbs I stupidly left outside. I was ready to swallow yet another loss until a friend pointed out that this is why I have insurance! According to Hungarian (and maybe worldwide?) insurance practices, your house cannot be insured unless you build a fence around it. The logic being, "well, if they break in and there is no fence around it, how do they know the house is not theirs." achem. So armed with my insurance papers we went to the nearest police station in Szendrő. Read more »
In the countryside
In the countryside this weekend with friends, we picked cherries, shelled peas at a neighbors with signifigant doses of homemade palinka, and of course cheered the Dutchies during the European Championship. Lennard and Jeroen came prepared with a Dutch Fan Starter Pack complete with wooden shoes; and clothing, party hats, hand clappers, and horns - all in orange of course. he local barflies at the Italbolt in Perkupa did not know what to make of us, but the commiserated with us at the end.Read more »

Walk in and hear The Dead
Someone came in yesterday and said, “Wow! This must be the only place in Hungary where you can walk in and hear The Dead.” On reflection, she is probably right. The majority of shops are tuned into Hungarian radio stations which mostly offer the same mix of techno and rap. So many people have asked what music we are listening to here at Treehugger Dan’s, I thought I would spread the good word about these internet radio stations:
Folk Alley
Grassyhill Radio
KPIG
KNBA
Last FM
My Caboodle
Caboodle has recently revamped their entire website, and has added a nifty feature called My Caboodle where you can make and share lists of various things of interest to you. Although it currently involves too many steps for my liking, it is easy to use, and they are hard at work ironing out all the kinks.Read more »
The Last Drops
Two nights ago I went to see the band The Last Drops at the Feszek Club. Until last night I was not aware that this former communist-period artists' club, well-known to have the best cold cherry soup in the city, also had a small music club and bar downstairs. With the exception of Mookie Brando and the Second Cousins, and The Random Chocolates, I have rarely seen a band visibly enjoy themselves so much on stage. Read more »
Paper Mage
I am a big fantasy sci-fi buff, but after a time I just had to stop reading the books because they were so similar, or I would realise 20 pages into it that I had already read it. No such problems there with Leah R. Cutter's Paper Mage (ROC, 2003). Read more »
Niall Connolly, Neal McCarthy, David Rynhart, Stephen Murray
On May 17th, Niall Connolly, Neal McCarthy, David Rynhart, Stephen Murray brought their Voice & The Verse tour to Treehugger Dan’s Bookstore & Lounge. The show brought together two of Ireland's leading musicians (Niall Connolly & David Rynhart) with two of Ireland's cutting edge poets (Neil McCarthy & Stephen Murray) and stuffed them into 3-hour show. Niall, Stephen, David and Neal have all performed at Treehugger Dan’s in the past, and they bring the house down every time. This show was no exception. They are all accomplished performers of their art and have taken the stage in Glastonbury, New York, London, Budapest, Melbourne and the Prague Fringe. Whether it was Niall’s songs that can make me cry with joy, Neal’s poems that make give me goose bumps or belly-laugh, David’s blues that make you want to get up and stomp, or Stephen’s rappish ode to the “Girl Beast,” it is not a performance to be missed. Folks, I don’t even like poetry and this stuff is fantastic. Luckily, they have promised to come back again in December. If you come out for any event this year, this is the one not to be missed.
