Killing Kenny

Josey and I had killed Kenny 10 times already before this year, but just like in South Park, Kenny the Turkey comes back every year. The first year we thought we would be smart, because neither of us wanted to pluck the guts out, and asked for a "bontàtt pulyka".Read more »

Bitch Moan and Wine Tasting: The Wines of the Baron von Twickel Vineyard

Bitch Moan and Wine Tasting: The Wines of the Baron von Twickel Vineyard in Szekszard. For our third wine tasting, sampled a fine selection of red wines from the Baron von Twickle Vineyard in Szekszard (formally Szekszard Zrt.). Representing the vineyard was Mr. Nayan Gowda, the new Head Wine Maker, and Baron von Twickel himself. The vineyard was kind enough to sponsor this event with a selection of 6 red wines, including:

Night at the Uj Szinhaz

Last night I went to a concert at the Uj Szinhaz (New Theater), this amazing building across the street from the Opera House on Paula Ede u. The outside looks something between Secessionist and the set from the movie Tron, while the inside has both an aquarium motif as well as something out of a Czech fairytale. The occassion was harmonica virtuoso Gyorgy Ferenczi's fortieth birday party.Read more »

Election Night Party

About 1000 people gathered at the Corinthia Hotel last night to watch the elections and party. Although the majority were Americans, there was still a large turn-out of Hungarians and Canadians. The huge buffet, while lacking in vegetarian options, was splendid and was kept full all night. I was especially happy, since it was the first time in a week I have been able to eat with a fork. The free bar was also a plus and helped dull my dental pain. Everyone got a free cocktail from the Jack Daniel's bar, though for some reason they put ginger ale in my mojhito.Read more »

Study Tour in Croatia

Last week I helped take a group of 12 Kosovar Albanian environmental activists around Croatia to introduce them to other active NGOs in the region and in particular, show them examples of successful campaigns. We visited several NGOs, all at different levels of development and with different expertise. I was quite proud to see how successful Green Action has become since my trainings with them in the early 1990's.Read more »

Historical Fiction

I have become a real fan of historical fiction. I guess it started in gradeschool when I had to read Johnny Tremain by Esther Forbes. Based on the bully in Tom Brown's Schooldays, George MacDonald Fraser's Flashman series is a great romp through historical fiction during the 19th century British Empire. Unlike the heroes in the same genre such as Johnnie Tremain, C.S.Read more »
